About Ditte Kvist Johnson
I am a PhD student in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History. My project seeks to investigate the role of sculpture in shaping culture and society in Hellenistic Athens (c. 323–88 BC) by focusing on the interaction between human and material agency. More specifically, my project focuses on the interaction between viewers and statues by examining the design of statues and how this affected the people who viewed them and the urban landscapes of which they were a part. The project examines honorific statues as well as statues of gods, athletes, heroes, and other mythological figures. In this way, it is the aim of the project to offer new perspectives on the processes that maintained and furthered social order and political culture in Athens. My main supervisor is prof. Lena Larsson Lovén (University of Gothenburg) and my co-supervisor is assoc. prof. Troels Myrup Kristensen (Aarhus University).
