About Bryan Mabee

I completed my BA and MA degrees in Political Studies at the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, Canada; and completed my PhD in the Department of International Politics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (2002). I taught and researched in the UK for 16 years – at Oxford Brookes University (2002-2006) and Queen Mary, University of London (2007-2018) – before moving to the School of Global Studies in 2018.

Areas of interest

My main research areas are in histories and theories of militarism, the political economy of security, and the history of international thought.

Current research

My current research projects examine the role of business and markets in total defence (and other ‘whole of society’ approaches to security); the conceptual history of militarism in international relations; sociological perspectives in the history of international thought (especially in the World War II and the early-Cold War periods); and the concept of ‘post-truth’ in international relations.

I am the Project Leader for the research project ‘Bringing the Market Back in: The Role of Business in Societal Security in Sweden and Finland’ funded by the Swedish Research Council: https://www.gu.se/en/research/bringing-the-market-back-in-the-role-of-business-in-societal-security-in-sweden-and-finland

Teaching and supervision

My main teaching is in the International Relations programme at SGS, particularly in global political economy and international relations theory. I also teach on the MA in Global Studies.
