Course Description
This course explores key aspects of the nexus of migration and integration from a political economy perspective. To do so, it sets out by explaining the basics of macroeconomics and relates this to the extensive literature and political debate on the fiscal impact of migration. Currently there is a scientific and political consensus around the conception that labour migrants and refugees who earn below-average incomes constitute net fiscal costs and so jeopardize the financial sustainability of the welfare state. This provided, it becomes more important for migration and integration researchers to understand the basics of fiscal and monetary policy. The course then goes on to examine several salient issues relating to the political economy of migration and integration, including the racialization of welfare; precarious labour; EU labour migration policy; the moral economies of migration; the migrant detention economy; and alternative migration policies that advocate social justice and inclusion.
