Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
• explain and understand the main concepts within research-based sport psychology and understand sport psychology as a scientific discipline.
• describe sport psychological phenomena and processes active in competitive sports and/or organized sports.
• describe and explain the relationships between physical activity and psychological health.
Competence and skills
• apply sport psychological theories and methods to a practical sporting environment.
Judgement and approach
• analyse and evaluate sport psychological theories and research.
• critically review methods and theories within sport psychology and mental training.
Course Content
The course provides a basic introduction to sport psychology as a scientific discipline, as well as knowledge about how psychological factors and processes influence the individual in sports participation and physical activity. More specifically, the course focuses on sport psychology related to performance psychology.
Examples of factors and processes addressed include competition anxiety and stress management, motivation, self-confidence, goal setting, and mental training.
Forms of Teaching
Teaching is conducted through lectures and seminars.
Language of instruction: English.
Teaching and examinations are conducted in English. Certain components may be conducted in Swedish.
Assessment
The course is assessed through an oral presentation and a written examination assignment. The oral presentation is graded Pass (G) or Fail (U). Students must pass the oral presentation in order to complete the written examination assignment. The written examination assignment is graded Fail (U), Pass (G), or Pass with Distinction (VG).
Supplementary completion of a failed written report is permitted. If a student does not submit the supplementary work within the specified time, the examination assignment will be failed.
In the event of absence from compulsory components, the student is responsible for contacting the course coordinator to receive information regarding the next examination opportunity or an alternative examination assignment.
If a student who has failed the same assessed component twice requests a change of examiner before the next examination opportunity, such a request should be submitted in writing to the department and shall be granted unless there are special reasons not to do so (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 6, Section 22).
If a student has received a recommendation from the University of Gothenburg regarding special educational support, the examiner may, provided it is compatible with the course learning outcomes and does not require unreasonable resources, decide to offer the student an adapted examination or an alternative form of assessment.
If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, students shall be guaranteed at least three examination opportunities (including the ordinary examination opportunity) during a period of at least one year, though no longer than two years after the course has been discontinued or changed.
Grading
The grades awarded are Pass with Distinction (VG), Pass (G), and Fail (U).
To receive a Pass grade, the student must have participated in all assessed components and achieved the established learning outcomes for the course.
To receive Pass with Distinction, the student must achieve VG on the written examination assignment.
Course Evaluation
Course evaluation is conducted in writing and possibly orally. The results and any changes to the course structure shall be communicated both to the students who completed the evaluation and to students who will begin the course.
