Nestor Stenson works in financial transformation
Nestor Stenson studied the Bachelor's Programme in Business and Economics and the MSc in Accounting and Financial Management, and now works as a consultant at Deloitte in the Finance Transformation department.
Nestor's role at Deloitte
Nestor Stenson is a Finance Transformation consultant at Deloitte. 'In our department, we partly focus on interim solutions, providing on-site resources to help companies develop their finance function. These solutions are tailored to the needs of our clients, ranging from CFOs to more junior finance staff. We also offer project solutions that are specifically tailored to the client, developing processes, systems, automation or tools within the finance function. Our working methodology means that you are usually assigned to the same client for each project, enabling you to work closely with the client's organisation and gain an in-depth understanding of their business," Nestor explains.
He describes his daily work as incredibly varied and says that one of the best things is getting to try out different roles in different types of organisations. He adds, “Every new assignment brings new challenges and opportunities to learn and develop. What's more, I get to be involved in making improvements that have a positive impact on our clients' organisations.”
Favourite courses during his studies
Nestor describes the technical foundation he gained from courses such as External Accounting and Financial Management as being invaluable to his work. The programme has also given him an understanding of economic relationships and honed his analytical abilities. ‘The ability to process large amounts of information, determine what is relevant, and solve problems are invaluable skills in the working world.’
During his bachelor's programme, Nestor enjoyed courses such as external accounting and financial management, but he found statistics the most enjoyable. ‘I've always liked maths, and statistics felt like a natural extension of that.’ At master's level, his favourite course was advanced data analysis. ‘It was exciting to gain insight into how Python can be used in the financial industry, and this feels increasingly relevant with the advent of AI.’
Contact with the business community
His involvement in a student union company at the School and his contact with the business community were two of the key reasons why he ended up at Deloitte. His current role at Deloitte is Nestor's first job since graduating. A former colleague from HandelsConsulting advised him to apply. 'After talking to him and other acquaintances who also worked there, I felt it was the right move. After the interview process, I got the job.'
Nestor also recommends getting involved in activities outside of your studies, such as student associations or project groups, in order to build networks and establish contacts in the business community. “During my time at the School, we had many external guest lecturers and opportunities to meet companies through events such as Gadden and Rekon. These added more perspectives and depth to the education.”
Future plans
Nestor wants to continue working in financial decision-making, ideally in a role that involves him in the day-to-day operations of a business. “I am goal-oriented and want to work for a company whose product I believe in, where my work contributes to making society or the world a better place.”
