Content

The course introduces the student to foundational artistic techniques and processes, emphasising the possibilities within craft.

Through a set of individual projects, the student will explore various methods of generating form through additive and subtractive processes using designated materials and tools. Further, the student will explore the overarching concept of craft through projects problematising the common understanding of a selected number of concept used in processes of forming materials.

In the course, the student will begin to develop language and communication skills related to creative processes, encouraging the student to express ideas and actively participate in dialogue.

Utilising and combining analogue and digital tools, the student will experiment with predetermined as well as locally sourced materials to enhance their creative practice and develop a deeper understanding of materiality, form and place. Further, the student is introduced to work practically with the effects of natural forces in relation to seasonal change and the emergent behaviour of material.

The course emphasises the safe utilisation of technical workshops, ensuring the student is equipped with the necessary skills for safe and effective use of tools and equipment.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to

Knowledge and Understanding

  • identify implications encountered during the use of technical processes
  • account for the use of a range of tools and equipment safely in workshop environments

Competence and Skills

  • implement a process of testing methods as a means for generating form
  • consistently engage in the maintenance of shared workspaces and shared tools and equipment
  • investigate both conventional and unconventional tools, methods and materials to innovate and generate artistic ideas

Judgement and Approach

  • adapt techniques to suit specific artistic needs and objectives
  • gain understanding of the relationship between natural resources and place
  • describe and justify the choice of techniques, materials, and artistic expressions using a coherent language for their own craft process.

Sustainability labelling

The course is sustainability-focused, which means that at least one of the learning outcomes clearly shows that the course content meets at least one of the University of Gothenburg’s confirmed sustainability criteria. The content also constitutes the course's main focus.

Form of teaching

Teaching takes place in the form of applied exercises, seminars, workshops, reviews, and tutoring both individually and in groups.

Language of instruction is English.

Examination formats

The learning objectives are examined through:

  • oral presentation of artistic process
  • oral presentation at text seminars
  • workshop maintenance sessions
  • portfolio presented at the end-of-term review.

Complementation of an examined student performance may be allowed. The possibility of complementation is assessed on an individual basis and decided by the examiner. Complementation is carried out through the supplementary assignments determined by the examiner and within a specified timeframe.

Absence from examination may be replaced with another form of examination after the examiner's assessment.

If a student who has been failed twice for the same examination element wishes to change examiner before the next examination session, such a request is to be granted unless there are specific reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6 Section 22 HF).

If a student has received a certificate of disability study support from the University of Gothenburg with a recommendation of adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment, an examiner may decide, if this is consistent with the course’s intended learning outcomes and provided that no unreasonable resources would be needed, to grant the student adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment.

If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student must be offered at least two examination sessions in addition to ordinary examination sessions. These sessions are to be spread over a period of at least one year but no more than two years after the course has been discontinued/changed. The same applies to placement and internship (VFU) except that this is restricted to only one further examination session.

If a student has been notified that they fulfil the requirements for being a student at Riksidrottsuniversitetet (RIU student), to combine elite sports activities with studies, the examiner is entitled to decide on adaptation of examinations if this is done in accordance with the Local rules regarding RIU students at the University of Gothenburg.

Grades

The grading scale comprises: Pass (G) and Fail (U).

Course evaluation

Students are given the opportunity to evaluate the course anonymously at the end of the course. The results of and possible changes to the course will be shared with students who participated in the evaluation and students who are starting the course.

Other regulations

  • Materials and certain workshop costs are covered by the student.
  • The workshops provide basic techniques for a variety of materials. Beyond this, the student may need to supply materials, tools, and equipment of their own.
  • Software and digital services not provided by the university are at the student's expense.
  • Additional costs for travel, study visits, and shipping may apply.
