Art- and Cultural Theory 3

The course is a programme course given during the third semester.

The course is part of the BFA Programme in Fine Art (K1FRI).

A Pass grade (G) on the folllowing courses:

• Art and Cultural Theory 1, 7,5 credits (FRGAC1)
• Art and Cultural Theory 2, 7,5 credits (FRGAC2).

The course explores the art exhibition as a critical form that creates publics, with examples spanning from the Renaissance to today. The art exhibition is understood in an expanded sense as an interface between society, art, and audiences. By studying concrete examples from various art and cultural theoretical perspectives, students learn to examine the exhibition as a critical form. This involves discussing, analysing, and evaluating it in relation to communities, conflicts, power relations, and boundaries within contemporary publics. In a written essay, students develop their understanding of the conditions of art exhibitions and their role as a medium for artistic expression.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to

• describe the role of the art exhibition as a critical form in the public sphere

Skills and Abilities

• critically examine a contemporary or historical art exhibition from art and cultural theoretical perspectives
• critically review others' art-critical texts

Judgement and Approach

• analyse the relationship of a contemporary or historical art exhibition to the public sphere based on art and cultural theoretical perspectives.

Teaching takes place in the form of lectures, seminars, tutoring and text reading.

The language of instruction is Swedish and English. Instruction may primarily be in English if exchange students participate in the course.

The learning outcomes are examined through

• written assignments
• an oral presentation of a completed essay at the final seminar.

Complementation of an examined student performance may be allowed. The possibility of complementation is assessed on an individual basis and decided by the examiner. Complementation is carried out through the supplementary assignments determined by the examiner and within a specified timeframe.

Absence from examination may be replaced with another form of examination after the examiner's assessment.

If a student who has been failed twice for the same examination element wishes to change examiner before the next examination session, such a request is to be granted unless there are specific reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6 Section 22 HF).

If a student has received a certificate of disability study support from the University of Gothenburg with a recommendation of adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment, an examiner may decide, if this is consistent with the course’s intended learning outcomes and provided that no unreasonable resources would be needed, to grant the student adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment.

If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student must be offered at least two examination sessions in addition to ordinary examination sessions. These sessions are to be spread over a period of at least one year but no more than two years after the course has been discontinued/changed. The same applies to placement and internship (VFU) except that this is restricted to only one further examination session.

If a student has been notified that they fulfil the requirements for being a student at Riksidrottsuniversitetet (RIU student), to combine elite sports activities with studies, the examiner is entitled to decide on adaptation of examinations if this is done in accordance with the Local rules regarding RIU students at the University of Gothenburg.

The grading scale comprises: Pass (G) and Fail (U).

Students are given the opportunity to evaluate the course anonymously at the end of the course. The result and any changes to the structure of the course should be communicated both to the students who carried out the evaluation and to the students who are to start the course.
