Apply for Contemporary Traditions in Music

The admission test is divided into two rounds. Round 1 is done remotely. Round 2 is on site at the Academy of Music and Drama (Eklandagatan 86, Gothenburg, Sweden). If it is impossible for you to take the test physically on site, it can be done remotely via SlideRoom and Zoom.

In the spring of 2026, the first audition (round 1) will be held digitally. For the completed audition, you will upload video files of yourself playing/singing, either solo or accompanied by one or more fellow musicians. At least one of the songs/tunes in audition round 1 must be solo. Please read below, under the respective heading for more information about the two audition rounds.

Test round 1: Video recordings

• You are to perform 3–5 songs/tunes of your choice, of which at least one must be a solo without accompaniment or fellow musicians.
• The combined length of all your videos may not exceed 15 minutes.
• You must demonstrate familiarity with the genre, technical ability and your musical expression skills. If you are playing together with an accompanist/fellow musician, your communicative ability will also be assessed.
• You do not need to demonstrate breadth across multiple genres; you can choose music from a single style or genre if you want. Within that style/genre, you are welcome to demonstrate breadth both in terms of repertoire (regarding, for example, character, time signature, tempo and key/mode) and in terms of your technical skills.
• Upload your video recordings in SlideRoom. You create a new account in SlideRoom yourself with your e-mail address and password of your choice.

If you pass round 1, you will be invited to round 2.

Test round 2: On site or remotely

Audition round 2 will be held on site at the Academy of Music and Drama (Eklandagatan 86 in Gothenburg). If it is impossible for you to attend the audition in person, it can be done remotely via SlideRoom and Zoom. Detailed instructions for exam round 2 will be sent together with the invitation by email in February. The exams cover elements of ear training, sight-reading, ensemble playing, rhythm and accompaniment.

Instructions and criteria for videos

Video recordings will only be accepted as grounds for evaluation if you follow the instructions below in your application:

• Read the test instructions for the programme you are applying for carefully to know what you need to upload.
• Begin each video by introducing yourself. You must also state clearly what piece you are going to perform in the recording. Your videos will not be considered valid unless your face and your hands are visible the entire time.
• Perform only one song/piece per video. Each video may be at most 6 minutes long and must be performed in a single uncut take. No clipping or other technical editing is allowed. The total length of your videos together may not exceed 15 minutes.
• Remember to do a sound test with your recording equipment prior to recording. The sound must be of high quality, without excessive room acoustic effects, distortion or noise.
• The videos must be of good picture quality, with clear focus and good lighting.
• The recordings must be uploaded in one of the following approved file formats: MP4 or MOV. Other file formats are not allowed.
• Remember that many people may be trying to upload videos in the final days before the application deadline, which may overload the servers. If your videos have not been submitted prior to the deadline, your test will be invalid, so make sure you don’t wait until the last day/days to upload them so you know your videos will be received in time.

If you do not follow these instructions, or if we suspect that the videos you submit have been modified, your application may be judged to be invalid.
