On 11 May, researchers, policymakers, students, and members of the public gathered for the conference “The EU’s Global Role in a Time of War and Transatlantic Tensions,” a timely event that examined Europe’s position in an increasingly uncertain international landscape
Organized by Dr Lisbeth Aggestam and the Centre for European Research (CERGU), the conference provided a platform for insightful analysis and lively discussion on some of the most pressing geopolitical challenges facing Europe today. Expert speakers explained the impact of ongoing conflicts, shifting global power dynamics, and evolving transatlantic relations on Europe’s future role in the world.

The conference’s keynote address was delivered by renowned European affairs scholar Sven Biscop of Ghent University and the Egmont Institute. In a compelling presentation, Biscop examined the strategic implications of war, geopolitical competition, and transatlantic tensions for Europe. His keynote generated significant interest, especially from students, and sparked engaging discussions among many in attendance.
Another highlight of the event was the panel discussion featuring scholars from the University of Gothenburg, including former European Commissioner Cecilia Malmström, currently Assar Gabrielsson Guest Professor at the School of Business, Economics and Law. The panel addressed key issues such as international trade, development, the role of small states in global affairs, and the importance of the United Kingdom for European security. The discussion offered diverse perspectives and valuable insights into Europe’s evolving geopolitical environment.
The conference attracted a highly engaged audience, with participants contributing actively during the question-and-answer sessions. The combination of distinguished speakers, timely topics, and informed debate created a memorable afternoon.
By bringing together leading scholars and practitioners to discuss Europe’s strategic challenges and opportunities, the conference proved to be a great success and an important contribution to the ongoing conversation about the European Union’s role in a rapidly changing world. For those who were unable to attend, a recording of the entire afternoon is available below.
About the conference convenor, Dr Lisbeth Aggestam:
The conference was initiated by Lisbeth Aggestam, Associate Professor in Political Science at the University of Gothenburg, affiliated with the Centre for European Research (CERGU). Her research focuses on the European Union as a global actor and on European foreign policy. Interest in these issues has increased significantly, not least since the beginning of 2026, and the aim of the conference was to provide a platform for discussing how the EU can act in an increasingly complex international environment.
