PALS 2025: Life Science Research Leaders from Across Sweden Gathered in Gothenburg

In early June, young research leaders from all over Sweden met in Gothenburg to participate in PALS 2025 – an annual life science conference focusing on interdisciplinary collaboration.

The conference’s keynote speaker was Stephen Quake, Professor of Bioengineering at Stanford University and Co-President of Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. Quake is renowned for his pioneering work in microfluidics and genomics. He has developed technologies that enable single-cell analysis and early fetal diagnostics without invasive procedures.

Quake has also contributed to the rise of single-cell genomics, revolutionizing how researchers study cells in, for example, the immune system and the brain. His research bridges technology and biology to solve medical and scientific challenges at the molecular level.

Molecular research was also a shared focus among the conference participants, who represent a wide spectrum of life science – from basic research and clinical studies to a strongly data-driven approach. From the University of Gothenburg, research leaders from both the Sahlgrenska Academy and the Faculty of Science and Technology participated.

Prominent researchers from Gothenburg and Sweden also participated: Ruth Palmer, Giovanni Volpe, and Joakim Lundeberg each gave inspirational lectures, followed by shorter presentations from participants within the same theme. Perhaps the most important part of the conference were the networking forums scheduled between each session, giving attendees ample time to talk, discover new collaboration opportunities, and collectively look ahead to future challenges.

The final day focused on industry and drug development, with representatives from AstraZeneca attending the conference. They shared insights into the process from idea to medicine and described how the company works with research and development within cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases.

The conference is part of the Program for Academic Leaders in Life Science (PALS), funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. Its main purpose is to create a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue to promote new research collaborations.

Ten Swedish universities, SciLifeLab, and the Swedish Museum of Natural History are part of the program. This year, the University of Gothenburg, through the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM), hosted the event. Next year, Linköping University will organize PALS 2026.
