Creating a monitoring hub to map use of AI in the Nordics

A new research project has received SEK 19,900,000 in funding from NORDFORSK to map the use of artificial intelligence in public services across the Nordic region and explore its societal impact.

The initiative aims to contribute to a broader understanding of responsible AI in the Nordic region.

“As AI becomes more common in public administration across the Nordic region, through this project we will map the societal impacts of these systems, with our research team focusing mainly on Sweden.” says Associate Professor Olgerta Tona, the project’s contact person from the University of Gothenburg.

Running over three years, the work brings together researchers from across the Nordic region to create a clear overview of AI systems used in public services. The focus is on mapping where and how AI is applied, and on collecting insights from both experts and citizens.

The project will develop open resources such as databases, surveys, and short reports. These will support more responsible, transparent, and fair use of AI, and help policymakers, researchers, and the public better understand how AI shapes everyday life.
