ARTISTIC RESEARCH

The two-year master’s programme in Film at HDK-Valand is an education focused on developing research skills and creative tools for enquiry in and with moving images. We encourage students of the programme to examine social, cultural, and political topics, through the medium of film, while always critically reflecting on the medium’s ethics and aesthetics.

PRACTICE AND THEORY

The programme proposes a strong relationship between theory and practice. We actively facilitate situations where practice can present theoretical propositions and encourage enquiry in and through the practices of film. Throughout the programme, students will be working on strengthening their awareness of ethical and aesthetic choices when working with visual material.

YOUR OWN INQUIRY

Through lectures, seminars, and practical exercises, students will develop and clarify their own interest and theme, identifying artistic enquiries for filmic work and exploring their own filmic practice with respect to method, process, and visualization. Through group discussions, students will exercise their critical ability in relation to their own and other students’ artistic work. By participating in seminars and activities in our research environment, students will have the opportunity to place their work in the context of artistic research and practical knowledge cultivation.
