Kvinnor Kan
Throughout its history, Valhallabadet has been the venue for many events, primarily in swimming and water sports. But it was also once the venue for the world’s first Kvinnor Kan (Women Can) fair, which was inaugurated in Valhallabadet’s pool hall in 1984. Mrs Christina Magnuson gave the opening speech, Queen Silvia was in attendance, there was aqua aerobics, opera singing and folk music – and as the highlight of the opening programme, Ulrika Knape demonstrated the ‘jump for the future’ that won her Olympic gold and silver in 1972 and 1976.
The exhibition features material from the fair and the opening ceremony in 1984, which is preserved in the KvinnSam archive under the ‘Kvinnor Kan’ collection.
About the exhibition
The exhibition forms part of a dialogue on the architectural qualities found at Valhallabadet. The exhibitors are Emma Svanberg and Benoit Maire, an architectural team who share an interest in swimming and bathing culture and are frequent visitors to Valhallabadet.
Opening of the exhibition
Thursday 21 May, at 17:30
At the opening, the exhibitors Emma Svanberg and Benoit Maire will guide visitors through the exhibition. Before the opening, a KvinnSamSem will be held at 16:30 in Forumet at the Humanities Library, with an open discussion about the building and how it is used beyond the expected, as well as the possibilities offered by archives.
