The Return of the Sturgeon: Lessons from Historical Data

During the spring, Lucia Snyderman  visited Gothenburg and the Return of the Sturgeon project for a three-week research exchange focused on the ongoing efforts to reintroduce Atlantic sturgeon to the Göta River.

In this Sea and Society Talk, she will share insights from her experiences in Sweden and discuss how historical knowledge has been crucial in enabling the reintroduction. She will also explore how similar methods can now be used to support sturgeon reintroduction efforts in the United Kingdom.

About the speaker

Lucia Snyderman is a conservation palaeobiologist at the Zoological Society of London and the University of Reading. Her research focuses on how historical data can be used to support modern conservation initiatives. As part of her PhD project, she investigates why sturgeon disappeared from UK rivers, using historical records to identify former breeding populations and suitable sites for future reintroductions.
