Numerical instabilities in Lorentz boosted plasma simulations

Frida Brogren

Abstract:

Laser wakefield acceleration is a promising technique for generating high-energy, short-duration electron beams. To probe the laser-plasma interaction Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations are widely employed, however, they demand significant computational resources. A compelling method to shorten computational time is to perform the simulation in a Lorentz-boosted frame, where the plasma gets contracted and the laser pulse elongated. Nevertheless, numerical instabilities which arise from the particles streaming with relativistic speeds compared to the electromagnetic grid have hindered implementation. This work considers the mitigation and characterization of these instabilities.
