Lecture
Welcome to an open lecture with sculptor Olof Marsja entitled The Baggage.
Olof Marsja works with sculptures that dwells inbetween the frail and the solid. It explores collective and personal history through a mix of traditional craftsmanship and industrial materials in his sculptures and installations. In his merging of Sámi and Swedish elements, stories of identity, place, cultural heritage and history emerge, characterised by both sincerity and humour.
"I would like to invite you to a lecture about being 50 percent prepared and 50 percent improvising. It might also touch upon the ideas and what I consider being the necessity of my practice. It will be a journey from the day I started digging the hole I’m currently standing in which is a void filled with joy, horror and doubt. In short, it will be a lecture about the work."
Marsja have a BA from Ädellab at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, and have studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Steneby school and the Sámi Education Institute in Jokkmokk. He has held solo exhibitions at 1646, The Hague, the Netherlands (2025); Örebro Konsthall (2025); Dalsland Museum of Art (2024); and the Sámi Center for Contemporary Art in Karasjok, Norway (2021–22). His work has been shown at, among others, Buffalo AKG Art Museum, New York; Kiasma, Helsinki; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale; Luleå Biennial; Havremagasinet, Boden; Göteborgs Konsthall; Bonniers Konsthall; and The Röhsska Museum.
He has also produced public sculptures commissioned by The Swedish artagency, Stockholm konst and Göteborg stadsdelsförvaltning. In 2019, he received the Maria Bonnier Dahlin Scholarship, and in 2023, he was awarded the Sten A. Olsson Cultural Scholarship.
The event is free of charge and open to anyone who wishes to attend, no registration is required.
The lecture will be held in English.
