Using an intersectional lens, the study examines how intersectional discriminations and gender-based violence affect women, men, and child migrants from Sub-Saharan African in Morocco. The empirical analysis is based on a mixed-methodological approach, and relies on desktop research and fieldwork of about 9 months mainly in several cities in Morocco, as well as in in other countries in Africa (e.g. Senegal, and Ivory Coast). The analysis combines semi-structured interviews with key actors, participant observation of key events, and a selection of key texts produced by political elites and their challengers, and civil society organizations, including immigrant associations. The main aim of the project is to contribute to the theoretical, methodological, and empirical advancement of intersecting research fields on the politics of migration, international mobility, immigrant social movements, racism and gender-based violence, from a decentralized and intersectional perspective.
During the seminar, Dr. Cappiali will share her preliminary findings as well as her methodological and ethical challenges conducting field research on the human rights of vulnerable groups, after spending three months in Morocco (May-August 2022).
