The world is faced with multiple crises. Global South nations bear their brunt, indicating a grim future for many of them. At the same time there is growing global class divide which means that the poor and marginalized in the Global North are also deeply impacted by the interlocking crises. The six crises touched upon are the war in Ukraine, Covid 19, growing poverty, global warming, digital inequalities, and the asylum crisis. It is contended that international law has, as in the past, furthered the interests of Global North nations, in particular its rich. If these crises have to be addressed, there must be recognition that these are linked to the inner logic and dynamics of the capitalist global order.
Professor Dr. B.S. Bhupinder Chimni has been named an Honorary Doctor of International Law at the School of Business, Economics and Law this year. He is affiliated to Jindal Global Law School, Delhi, India. Professor Chimni is an international law researcher of global repute, and his most outstanding achievement is the early establishment of a perspective on international law that made the voices of the Global South audible to mainstream debates.
