Wetlands provide key ecosystem services to humans. Monitoring water availability in wetlands is essential to understanding these ecosystem services. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and its Interferometry (InSAR) are promising technologies for observing these resources from space. InSAR employs the differences in the path length of two satellite acquisitions taken from the same orbit to generate maps of spatial and temporal changes of the water or land surfaces. We here show how InSAR, in combination with other remote sensing products and AI can help not only detect water level changes in wetlands but also changes in water surface extent below vegetation. This permits assessing the hydrological connectivity in wetlands and the behaviour of water below dense vegetation. We show results for wetlands in Sweden, South America, and Asia. Hence, we here reveal the immense potential of InSAR to track hydrological changes in wetlands.
