Senior Lecturer
Department of Languages and LiteraturesAbout Sabina Nedelius
Background
I hold a BA in English with a linguistic specialisation from the University of Gothenburg and an MSc in English with a focus on historical linguistics from the University of Edinburgh. I continued to take an interest in historical linguistics in my doctoral thesis, Changed Perspectives: On Modernised Punctuation in Middle English Texts (University of Oslo, 2022), in which I focused on how the intervention of modern punctuation, such as the addition of full stops and commas, in modern editions of Middle English texts may affect our understanding of the language and the texts’ literary meaning.
Teaching
I have worked as a senior lecturer at the University of Gothenburg since 2022 and teach both independent courses and courses on the teacher trainee programme. My primary teaching areas are language history, general linguistics, academic writing and speaking, grammar and phonetics. I also supervise theses at the BA and master’s levels, with a particular interest in essay topics with a focus on historical research, corpus linguistics, and computational linguistics.
Research
My primary research interests are historical linguistics, especially spelling variation and punctuation. In addition, I have a particular interest in digital humanities and how digital tools can provide new insights into language history. As a result, I often work both with extensive text collections (corpus linguistics) and primary sources (historical manuscripts). My research also involves scripting in Python, aiming to build specialised solutions for historical linguistic analysis, and I take a keen interest in AI, its uses, and its effects on our society.
