About Håkan Gustafsson

My primary fields of research and teaching encompass those traditionally included within jurisprudence, namely legal theory and legal philosophy, as well as sociology of law. In addition to an interest in classical legal philosophy and theory, my work is primarily concerned with issues relating to rights; interdisciplinary perspectives on pluralism, post/modern jurisprudence; deconstruction, critical legal theory, questions of justice, resistance and social movement studies, social law, welfare law, and "law and literature."

My doctoral dissertation, The Polyvalence of Law: A Legal Study of Social Rights and Legal Certainty (Lund, 2002), examines the opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in society through the rights-based legislation embodied in the Swedish Act Concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments (LSS). Particular attention is devoted to the status of social rights and to the issue of legal certainty within welfare law sectors. The dissertation adopts an interdisciplinary approach, integrating jurisprudence, theoretical reflections on law, sociological models of explanation, legal-historical inquiry, and concrete analysis in the field of social law.
