About Gleb Koran

I am a phd-candidate working at the intersection of cultural and media studies, with a focus on the post-Soviet space. I hold a BA and an MA in Cultural Studies, where I developed an interest in how cultural practices in digital media shape political life.

My current research examines Russian Left YouTube in the period 2014–2022. I study digital media, popular culture, and online communities as spaces where historical memory, political identity, and forms of authority are actively produced. Methodologically, my work is grounded in cultural materialism, which I use to analyze how cultural forms are reproduced and transformed across different historical contexts.

I am part of the Research School The Future of Democracy: Cultural Analyses of Illiberal Populism in Times of Crises (FUDEM) financed by the Swedish Research Council.

I have also been part of the research project “Adjustment and Radicalisation: Dynamics in Popular Culture(s) in Pre-War Eastern Europe” at the Leibniz Centre for Literary and Cultural Research (ZfL), which investigates cultural and political transformations across the region.
