About Fabio Angiolillo
I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at V-Dem Institute, Gothenburg University. I received my PhD in Political Science at the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and I held visiting positions at the Department of Government at Cornell and Freiburg University (Here is my CV).
My research interests center on comparative politics, political institutions, authoritarian and autocratizing regimes, and political parties. I combine quantitative methods, panel data, archival research, automated text analyses, and natural experimental research designs.
I use political parties to explain episodes of autocratization and authoritarian stability. I received the 2022 Virginia Gray Graduate Student Award by APSA Political Organisations and Parties Section for my dissertation project, where I explore the interaction between ruling parties and citizens in party-based autocracies, and the effects on regime survival. In a current project, I investigate historical and contemporary autocratization episodes and how political parties use citizens to seize power.
