About David Wackerberg

My research focuses on congenital cataract, a rare eye condition present at birth that can severely impair visual development if not treated early. While surgery has greatly improved outcomes, many children still experience reduced vision and long-term complications. The project also investigates how congenital cataract may be linked to underlying genetic disorders, syndromes, and other health conditions that can affect a child’s overall development.

The research consists of four interconnected studies based on Swedish national health registers. One study examines visual outcomes in children with unilateral congenital cataract and evaluates how early detection influences long-term vision. Another maps the frequency of genetic and systemic disorders among children with congenital cataract before routine genetic testing was introduced. A third project studies older children and adolescents with cataracts, with particular attention to treatable metabolic diseases such as cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX), where early diagnosis may prevent severe neurological complications. The final study evaluates whether the introduction of broad genetic testing in Sweden has improved the detection of underlying genetic diseases. Together, these projects aim to improve diagnosis, identify hidden comorbidities, and support more personalized care for children with cataracts.
