About Christina Mauléon
Background
I am a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Sociology and Work Science at the University of Gothenburg. I received my PhD in Technology Management and Economics from Chalmers University of Technology and have subsequently worked as a Senior Lecturer in Business Administration, specializing in Organization and Leadership, including at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg and the University of Borås.
Research profile
My research focuses on organizing, leadership and governance, with a particular emphasis on quality and safety. I study how these take shape in practice and am particularly interested in the interplay between formal governance systems, professional judgement and organizational processes under conditions of complexity and uncertainty.
I have explored these issues across different organizational contexts and from a range of perspectives – from quality improvement and safety culture to digital governance, indicators and professional work. A recurring perspective in my research is that quality and safety cannot simply be reduced to measurable indicators, but are continuously shaped through the interplay between people, technologies, regulation and organizational practice.
My current research lies within the area of civil defence and crisis preparedness, with a focus on organizing processes, leadership and governance under conditions of uncertainty. I am part of the research environment at the Swedish Defence University, where I contribute to the research area organizational and social processes in civil defence.

LedSamCF – Leadership and Collaboration for Civil Defence (2026–)
The research addresses organizing, leadership and collaboration under conditions characterized by crisis, uncertainty and changing demands on civil defence. The project is funded by the Swedish Civil Defence and Resilience Agency (CTF) and the Swedish Defence University (FHS). Projectledare: Aida alvinius, FHS.
Sustainability managers in the building sector: doing and undoing gender (2024–2027)
The project examines the interplay between gender, leadership and sustainability work in the construction sector, with a particular focus on how sustainability managers navigate, reproduce and challenge gendered norms and expectations. Digital governance, safety and action (2020–)
This research examines how digital governance management control systems, and indicators are interpreted, negotiated and enacted in organizations. Particular attention is paid to the interplay between forms of governance, technologies, knowledge and action in organizational practice. Funded by: Centre for wellfare studies, University of Borås. Quality for Sustainability (Q4S) (2009–)
An international research collaboration examining how quality and sustainability are defined, measured and translated into practice in organizations, and the tensions that arise between overarching governance ambitions and organizational practice. Projectleader: Raine Isaksson, Uppsala University
Research networks
Within Campus Total Defence, I am, together with Professor Aida Alvinius at the Swedish Defence University, responsible for the area 'Crisis preparedness in a broader societal context', which forms part of the research network 'Governance, leadership and collaboration in crisis and war'.

Communication Capability (participation until 2026)
Research on organizational and digital communication channels and their significance for voice, listening, feedback, and sustainable and safe work. Funded by AFA. Projectleader: Professor Lotta Dellve, University of Gothenburg.
CHEFiOS – Organizational conditions for managerial work (participation until 2026)
Research on the organizational conditions of managerial work and their implications for managers’ work, working environment and sustainability. Funded by the City of Gothenburg. Projectleader: Lotta Dellve.
Management systems and performance indicators for organizing and control and its effects on individual, organisational and societal levels (2014–2016).
The project investigated how information from digital management control systems and key performance indicators were interpreted, negotiated and used in organizational practice. Through studies of high-reliability organizations (HROs), the focus was on the effects and consequences of the interplay between digital management control systems and everyday organizational practice with intended as well as unintended consequences on quality, safety and risk.
