Research Engineer
Department of Biological & Environmental SciencesAbout Anna Pielach
I originally trained as a landscape architect specialising in vegetation ecology followed by a PhD in plant science. Under my doctoral studies in Galway, Ireland I researched the architecture of cell walls in parasitic plant haustoria using light and electron microscopy (EM). I complemented the microscopy work with field surveys of grasslands containing hemiparasites Rhinanthus minor and Odontites vernus. I then advanced my EM skills working as a staff scientist at EM facilities in Oxford and Gothenburg.
I have an active interest in bryology and lichenology and I am a member in the Swedish expert committee for red listing of bryophytes. I am also a mossfluencer and record species identification films for the Swedish Bryology YouTube channel. Practical meadow conservation and restoration is another big interest of mine.
As a reserach engineer at BioEnv I work with:
- safety introductions for staff and students
- maintenance of and introductions to microscopes
- Anne Bjorkman's (EDGE Lab) and Angela Wulff's research activities
- I represent technical support in the department council
Skills and interests:
- sample preparation for light and electron microscopy (fixation, embedding, sectioning, staining/contrasting)
- imaging (LM, SEM, TEM)
- botany, bryology, lichenology, vegetation ecology
