My PhD thesis is focused on fungal taxonomy, specifically the taxonomy and ecology of Hymenogaster (Basidiomycota, Agaricales), commonly referred to as ‘nut truffles’. I am working to understand how many species exist in the genus, and what characteristics can help us tell them apart. To do this, I do fieldwork, species distribution modelling, DNA sequencing, and microscopy. I am also trying to understand where the genus Hymenogaster fits within its fungal family, and understand which genera are closely related. I plan to sequence and assemble genomes from this group, as many species in it have no publicly available genomes. I am generally fascinated by fungi and really enjoy learning about the diversity within this kingdom. As an estimated 90% of fungal diversity is yet to be scientifically described, I am passionate about becoming a fungal taxonomist.
