Meet Merlind – Exploring Global Health in Sweden
From volunteering in Tanzania to studying in Sweden, Merlind from Germany has always been curious about how health connects with society. Now a Master’s student in Global Health at the University of Gothenburg, she’s exploring global challenges, meeting people from around the world, and discovering how equality and sustainability can shape a healthier future.
Hi Merlind! Why did you apply to the Master's programme in Global Health?
– I’ve always been curious about health and how it connects to society. My background in dentristry offered a focused view, volunteering in Tanzanian hospitals and schools opened my eyes to global health inequality. This programme helps me see the bigger picture and contribute to improving health and quality of life for communities around the world.
Why Sweden?
– My fascination with Scandinavia began a few years ago, and after spending time in Sweden two years back, I completely fell in love with the country’s culture and values. Sweden’s dedication to gender equality and sustainability inspires me, and studying in Gothenburg — the world’s most sustainable destination — allows me to connect these values with my passion for health.
What’s studying in Sweden like compared to home?
– Teachers and students are on the same level here, unlike in my home country Germany where there’s more hierarchy. Here there’s no such thing as ”stupid questions”, instead they often lead to meaningful and engaging discussions.
What’s the best and most challenging part of your studies?
– I love the interdisciplinary approach, where you get to study global health from many different perspectives. It’s rewarding but also challenging, when you realize how complex global health is and how everything is interconnected.
What’s the best thing about your teachers?
– They’re approachable, supportive, and welcome students to ask tricky questions and give them feedback. You really feel that your voice matters.
What’s student life like?
– There’s always something going on at the University of Gothenburg! Besides studying, Welcome services and the student unions organize lots of great events — and you can choose to join in, stay busy or just enjoy a quieter student life when you need it.
Have you done an internship?
– Yes, during summer break I did a three-months internship at the university exploring epidemiological research. Soon I’m going to India for an internship at our partner university Nitte University. I’m super excited!
What do you wish someone had told you as a new student?
– Learn Swedish early on — it can really help if you’d like to find a part-time job alongside your studies. Don’t be shy about meeting new people; some of the best moments happen over fika (coffee breaks) or fun hangouts.
Any advice for future students?
– Be curious and open-minded! This programme is your backstage pass to understanding how health connects with everything - from science to society. Get ready to flip your perspective and uncover layers you didn’t even know existed.
