Artistic Practice - Going Public & Collaboration I

The course is a programme course given during the third semester.

The course is part of the BFA Programme in Fine Arts 180 credits (K1FRI).

Admission to the course requires a pass grade of 45 credits within the BFA Programme in Fine Arts, including a passing grade in the courses Artistic Practice - Differences I, 15 credits (FRGKP1), Artistic Practice - Differences II, 15 credits (FRGKP2).

In the course, students test and challenge their artistic work in specific public contexts of their own choosing. By developing artistic projects based on given conditions and timeframes, as well as in collaboration with others, students broaden their understanding of their own artistic practice. During the course, students are introduced to various artistic discourses, methods, and approaches in contemporary public art projects. Different social and ethical aspects of artistic work are also discussed. Students deepen their skills in artistic media and methods through tutoring, critique seminars, workshops, and independent practical work. Additionally, they are introduced to different forms and techniques for documenting and describing their artistic process and work. The course also includes examples and practical exercises in budget planning.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• formulate intentions and goals for their own artistic work in relation to a specific public context
• account for considerations and challenges regarding the practical execution of their own artistic work in a specific public context

• plan and carry out their own artistic work in a specific public context
• develop their own artistic work in relation to formulated intentions in a specific public context
• discuss issues of exhibition, distribution, and reception of artworks in public settings

Judgement and Approach

• critically discuss their own artistic work based on formulated intentions and goals
• analyse issues, discourses, and methods in their own and others’ work, related to a specific public context
• reflect on their artistic process from social and ethical perspectives.

Teaching takes place in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops, individual and group tutoring, critique seminars, exhibition visits, field studies, and practical work.

The language of instruction is Swedish and English. Instruction may primarily be in English if exchange students participate in the course.

The learning outcomes are examined through:

• oral and visual presentation of the student's artistic work and process
• oral participation in critique seminars
• submission of assignments.

Complementation of an examined student performance may be allowed. The possibility of complementation is assessed on an individual basis and decided by the examiner. Complementation is carried out through the supplementary assignments determined by the examiner and within a specified timeframe.

Absence from examination may be replaced with another form of examination after the examiner's assessment.

If a student who has been failed twice for the same examination element wishes to change examiner before the next examination session, such a request is to be granted unless there are specific reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6 Section 22 HF).

If a student has received a certificate of disability study support from the University of Gothenburg with a recommendation of adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment, an examiner may decide, if this is consistent with the course’s intended learning outcomes and provided that no unreasonable resources would be needed, to grant the student adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment.

If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student must be offered at least two examination sessions in addition to ordinary examination sessions. These sessions are to be spread over a period of at least one year but no more than two years after the course has been discontinued/changed. The same applies to placement and internship (VFU) except that this is restricted to only one further examination session.

If a student has been notified that they fulfil the requirements for being a student at Riksidrottsuniversitetet (RIU student), to combine elite sports activities with studies, the examiner is entitled to decide on adaptation of examinations if this is done in accordance with the Local rules regarding RIU students at the University of Gothenburg.

The grading scale comprises: Pass (G) and Fail (U).

Students are given the opportunity to evaluate the course anonymously at the end of the course. The result and any changes to the structure of the course should be communicated both to the students who carried out the evaluation and to the students who are to start the course.

The student is responsible for any costs related to their own projects.
