John Paoli wins award for advancing dermoscopy

John Paoli is professor of dermatology and venereology at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. His research focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of skin cancer.

A central part of his research involves developing and evaluating dermoscopy, in which skin lesions are examined using a magnifying instrument, and teledermoscopy, in which images of skin lesions are sent digitally to a dermatologist for assessment. These methods help detect skin cancer earlier and provide better information for diagnosis and treatment.

“I am passionate about developing new methods that can reduce suffering and improve survival for more patients with skin cancer, while ensuring that healthcare resources are used as effectively as possible,” says John Paoli.

AI and advanced imaging

John Paoli currently leads and participates in several research projects involving artificial intelligence, advanced imaging, and new methods for diagnosing skin cancer.

He is also senior consultant at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Combining research with clinical work has long been central to his efforts to improve the diagnosis of skin cancer.

More than 1,500 physicians trained

Alongside his research, John Paoli has devoted considerable effort to education and increasing knowledge of dermoscopy. Since 2014, more than 1,500 physicians have participated in his courses. This has helped spread knowledge of how to diagnose skin lesions throughout healthcare, including beyond dermatology.

The Swedish Society of Medicine is awarding him the Schlasberg Award for his extensive clinical research on skin cancer and significant contributions to advancing and sharing knowledge of dermoscopy. The SEK 20,000 award will be presented at the Swedish Society of Medicine’s annual ceremony on 20 October 2026.
