The gauge invariant symplectic structure of Yang-Mills theory

Abstract

In this talk we discuss the Hamiltonian formulation of classical Yang-Mills theory, which is a non-linear generalization of electrodynamics. As is familiar from analytical mechanics, a crucial role is played by the symplectic structure on the phase space of the theory. This can be described by the so called (Poisson)bracket, which is an operation on the algebra of functions over the phase space. But in the present case there are some complications: The theory contains constraints related to its gauge invariance, and there are no really natural coordinates on the phase space. Nevertheless, it is possible to give a very explicit description of the bracket, which furthermore has a nice structure as a polynomial deformation of the bracket of the free theory.
