Some present-day Christian interpretation of parables, in both academy and church, appealing to questionable reconstructions of Jesus’ historical context, seek to make parables relevant by mapping onto first-century Judaism contemporary social problems and present Jesus as the only Jew interested in social justice. Better historical work retains the ethical import of the parables, avoids removing Jesus from his Jewish context, and prevents parable interpretation from promoting anti-Jewish stereotypes.
