Compressed Optical Streaking Ultra High-Speed Photography

Abstract

Ultra high speed photography is widely used in scientific imaging to shed light on ultrafast processes such as turbulence in fluids or (bio)chemical reactions. Despite technologies recording up to 100 million frames per second (fps) being commercially available, it is an expensive and resource demanding components that could lead to saturation or malfunction in critical moments, as experiments may not always be easily repeated. In this thesis, Single-shot Compressed Optical Streaking Ultra High Speed Photography is used for a variety of experiments, testing its applicability for dynamic, fast moving targets as well as fluorescent samples.  Using this technique I circumvent both high cost and high memory requirements \textit{in situ} while delivering frame rates up to 400,000 fps after postprocessing. Despite limitations on sequence depth (150 frames), this technique shows potential for conjunction with hyperspectral and/or microscopy methods to create an affordable multifunctional imaging framework.
