Odd-parity magnetism in Fe-based superconductors

Morten Holm Christensen (Niels Bohr Institute Copenhagen)

Abstract

Odd-parity magnetism constitutes an intriguing phase of matter which breaks inversion symmetry while preserving time-reversal symmetry. I will discuss the crystallographic symmetry requirements behind the formation of such a phase and show a few of its more peculiar consequences. Then, I will introduce the Fe-based superconductors and demonstrate that these constitute odd-parity magnets in a certain doping region, where the magnetic order is coplanar. These results are based on both low-energy and first-principles modelling of the Fe-based materials which allows us to understand the underlying microscopic parameters controlling the odd-parity magnetism and make material-specific predictions for the magnitude of the derived effects. I will go through the low-energy model in some detail and discuss the impact of atomic spin-orbit coupling on the odd-parity magnetism.
