Anne l’Huillier: An introduction to attosecond pulses and attosecond physics

Abstract

Extreme Ultraviolet light sources based on high-order harmonic generation in gases are now used in many areas of science. The radiation consists of extremely short light bursts, in the 100 as range, allowing for outstanding temporal resolution. We will give an introduction to this field of research.   One application is the measurement of ultrafast electron dynamics in matter, using interferometric techniques. We will describe recent measurements of ultrashort temporal delays in photoionization and of the quantum state of the created electron wavepackets.
