BIOMåns Lundstedt is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of sociology and work science at the University of Gothenburg. His research concerns contentious politics, migration, and political violence. In his seminar, Lundstedt interprets violent protest against the accommodation and settlement of humanitarian refugees as the result of complex and diverse trajectories at the intersection of local grievances and national-level far-right campaigns. Looking at violence as the emergent result of interpretive frames, political opportunities, collective emotions and relations that develop in the course of mostly nonviolent interactions among neighbors, friends, activists, and their opponents among anti-racists and public authorities, he identifies six distinct pathways. Hence through very different causes, these six pathways combined to make 2015 and 2016 among the most violent years recorded for Swedish anti-migrant campaigns. As detailed in the seminar, the explosion of single outcomes into six different combinations of causes allows us to develop a more nuanced understanding of a pressing social problem.
