The Swedish-born bassist and composer Björn Meyer, who has been based in Switzerland since 1996, has developed a musical language all of his own centred on the electric bass. Driven by a curiosity about the instrument’s tonal possibilities, he creates music in which notes, overtones, textures and acoustic spaces become just as important as the instrument itself.
Meyer’s solo work has taken him to stages and festivals around the world, from the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and Ronnie Scott’s in London to Istanbul, Yokohama and Tehran. At the same time, he has forged long-standing collaborations across genre and cultural boundaries, including with Anouar Brahem, Bazar Blå and Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin. Meyer has been awarded the Swiss Music Prize and the Canton of Bern Music Prize and continues to explore the possibilities of the electric bass with a rare combination of precision, presence and musical imagination.
The concert is an extension of a seminar that Björn is giving that same afternoon for music students on the Master’s programs in Improvisation or World Music, The Composing Musician, and Experimental Composition and Creation.
Anders Hagberg, teacher at the programs, is invited as a guest performer.
