About Prins-Frei Lorenzburg

Prince Frei Lorenzburg is a doctoral researcher in artistic research at the Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg. He trained as a dancer and choreographer at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London and holds a Master’s degree in Contemporary Performative Arts from the Academy of Music and Drama. As a choreographer and performance artist, he works at the intersection of art, storytelling, public ceremony and social engagement. Since 2014, his artistic practice has centred on the princely role and what it means to perform royal work in public. He has previously taught dance and performance at folk high schools and universities, primarily in Värmland.

Prince Frei’s research explores what the aesthetics, performative forms and ethical dilemmas of monarchy can do and be when they are not merely represented “as art projects”, but practised post-fictionally as an actual office. The point of departure is that royal work can be understood as an independent profession or sector, whose components and procedures can be analysed, taken apart and reassembled into a modern care profession that can be learned. Knowledge production takes place largely through practice-based reactivations of performatively significant moments from European royal history. These reactivations encounter a public and are brought into dialogue with thinkers who have articulated ideas around practices of care, queer-feminist phenomenology, political theology and the exercise of soft power.

Prince Frei welcomes proposals for interdisciplinary collaborations.
