About Julian Walterskirchen

I am a PhD student in the Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg. My research focuses on empirical conflict studies, particularly the connections between international, interstate, and intrastate dynamics in civil conflict. I have a strong interest in quantitative methods, conflict prediction, and the use of natural language processing (NLP) in political science.

I hold an M.Sc. in International Relations from the University of Essex and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Innsbruck.

Before starting my PhD, I worked as a Research Associate at the Center for Crisis Early Warning (CCEW) at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich (2021–2024), where I explored text-as-data approaches to conflict prediction and contributed to a project developing a crisis early warning system for Germany’s Ministry of Defence. Previously, I was a Research Assistant on a project examining sanctions dynamics at the University of Innsbruck (2019–2021). I also worked as a consultant on the prevention of violent extremism (PVE) at the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism in New York (2017–2019).
