About Ingela Parmryd
Ingela Parmryd is Professor in Medical and Physiological Chemistry, Docent in Cell Biology and has a PhD in Biochemistry. She works at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology at the Institute of Biomedicine.
Research
The research Ingela Parmryd conducts with her co-worders deals with the organisation of the cell-surrounding plasma membrane, both regarding its heterogeneity and topography, where signal transmission in T cells, a part of our immune defence, is in focus. Another area where membrane organisation is of great importance is during virus infection and the group studies how infection can be reduced by changing the characteristics of the membrane.
Methods that are used in the group include fluorescence and superresolution microscopy, lipid analysis as well as biochemical and molecular biology methods. An important aspect of the research is the development of new image analysis methods, which has resulted in patents and the founding of a company.
Teaching
Ingela Parmryd has shared responsibility for term 1 in the Medical School for Medicine students where she is in charge of parts of the Introductory course and a large block of the teaching in Biochemistry. She is also an examiner in Biochemistry. In addition, Ingela Parmryd teaches thermodynamics and metabolism for the Dental students.
Outreach
Popular scientific demonstrations and presentations are given by Ingela Parmryd for instance during the Gothenburg International Science Festival and the Gothenburg Book Fair. Co-founder of the company No More Noise that holds patents on correlation analysis noise-elimination method developed in the group.
Assignments
Ingela Parmryd is a member of the Sahlgrenska Academy since 2024. She is regularly engaged in evaluation assignments, for instance by the Swedish Research Council, the MRC and the Welcome Trust UK and the Czech Academy of Sciences. In 2021-2024 Ingela Parmryd was a member of the leadership/chair of the Membrane Structure and Function subgroup of the Biophysical Society, US.
