About Chiara Pasian

After a BA in Conservation at the University of Tuscia, Viterbo (Italy), I specialised in Conservation of Decorative Architectural Surfaces (wall paintings, stone, stuccoes), obtaining an MA at the University of Applied Arts and Sciences of Southern Switzerland, Lugano (CH). I obtained a PhD at The Courtauld Institute of Art (University of London), Conservation of Wall Paintings Department, focusing on non-structural injection grouts with reduced water content, suitable in water-sensitive situations (soluble salts problems, water-sensitive materials).

After 7 years teaching at the University of Malta, Department of Conservation and Built Heritage, I joined in 2024 the Department of Conservation of the University of Gothenburg.

I am interested in applied research, linking academia to the practical field of conservation, and I work also as an on-site conservator.

I am currently elected Secretary and Expert Member of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee for Mural Painting; Assistant Coordinator (ACO) of the ICOM-CC Mural, Stone, and Rock Art Working Group; and Senior Member of the RILEM Technical Committee 277-LHS Specifications for testing and evaluation of Lime-based repair materials for Historic Structures.

My research interests are:

Wall paintings technology; deterioration and conservation of decorative architectural surfaces; treatment design for decorative architectural surfaces (wall paintings, stone, plasters); lime-based and gypsum-based conservation materials testing and evaluation; field testing and laboratory testing of conservation materials.

Courses at GU:

Inorganic Materials Conservation; Advanced course in Conservation Methodology; Collection management; Professional Skills; Theory and History of Conservation; Intensified Literature
