Alyssa Joyce (Docent / Associate Professor) is an expert in marine biotechnology and ecological engineering, with more than a decade of experience leading international, cross-disciplinary teams working at the intersection of agri-food systems, renewable energy, and water resource management. Her research addresses key challenges in sustainable food systems, specifically the advancement of aquatic and blue biotechnology applications including aquaponics, aquaculture, and ocean-based bioproducts to strengthen food security, promote resource-efficient production, and foster climate-resilience.
Alyssa's work is firmly rooted in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to zero hunger, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and responsible consumption and production. Her research translates science into practical solutions by informing sustainable agriculture and aquaculture policy, shaping circular economic strategies, and improving livelihoods through systems-based innovation. She has served as principal investigator on numerous global initiatives funded by the EU, SIDA, Belmont Forum, FOSC, Future Earth, STINT, Formas, VR, Vinnova, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, WIOMSA, and others.
Dr. Joyce has worked extensively across diverse research and industrial settings to develop scalable and profitable strategies for sustainable aquaculture, focusing on all aspects of production—from hatchery to harvest and processing. Her team employs ecological systems analysis, socio-ecological systems thinking, and advanced modelling tools to co-design tools for agroecology, smart agricultural technologies, agrobiodiversity, and food systems equity. Their combined expertise spans marine bioresources, live-feed hatchery systems, water and wastewater engineering, resource recovery engineering, pollution mitigation technologies, and geospatial data analysis.
Current research in her group includes:
• Marine bioengineering and innovative technologies for offshore, intertidal, and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), as well as integrated aquaponics models
• Climate-smart technologies, nature-based solutions for water management, and strategies to support resilient livelihoods
• Reducing antimicrobial resistance through probiotic strategies and targeted drug delivery in aquaculture
• Promoting food sovereignty through decentralized and climate-adaptive agri-food production systems
• Applying landscape ecology and ecosystem-based adaptation to enhance integrated environmental planning
Alyssa is an experienced science communicator and documentary producer committed to translating technical knowledge into accessible tools for education and policy engagement. Her lab maintains active collaborations with partners across Europe, Canada, the United States, and Australia. With support from SIDA and other international organizations, she also contributes to research and capacity-building initiatives in Southeast Asia, South America, and the South Pacific on projects emphasizing sustainable resource governance, the development of sustainble agricultural value chains, and adaptation planning for vulnerable food systems.
