Meet Henrietta – the Global Health Student Making a Difference

Hi Henrietta Broberg! Why did you choose to study the Master’s Programme in Global Health at the University of Gothenburg?
– I wanted to study Global Health, but not many universities in Finland offer a master’s degree. Since Swedish is my second mother tongue University of Gothenburg felt like a great choice. It’s a respected university, and as a Nordic citizen, I didn’t have to pay tuition fees.

What’s the best part of your studies?
– Definitely the international atmosphere! You meet students and teachers from around the world and you get to engage with real-world global challenges and collaborate across cultures. The hardest part is the heavy workload, and complex subjects like epidemiology and health policy.

What do you think about the teachers?
– They are supportive and bring real-world experience from global health projects. I like that they come from different fields, so you get many perspectives.

Is it harder than you expected?
– It depends on your academic background. For me, biostatistics was tough at first, since it was completely new.

How’s student life in Gothenburg?
– It’s lively and fun! There are student unions, events, and activities all the time. You can enjoy buzzing nightlife, or just enjoy nature in the beautiful archipelago outside Gothenburg. There is something for everyone.

Have you done an internship?
– Yes, right now I’m in Angola with UNICEF. I work with child protection and crisis management. And I’m here for a whole semester – it feels great!

Any advice for future students?
– Apply if you’re curious about global health and enjoy an international environment. At first, things may feel overwhelming, but you’ll learn. And don’t stress – you’ll make friends and figure it out along the way.

What do you wish you knew as a new student?
– Not everything makes sense right away, and that’s okay. Confusion is a part of the learning process.

What are your future goals?
– I want to work with crisis management and emergency preparedness for international organizations. Field work and working with communities is something I’m really passionate about.

1. Visit the archipelago – go hiking, kayaking, or take a dip in the sea.
   My favourite islands are Hönö, Vinga Island, and Vrångö.
2. Go to Liseberg amusement park – it’s magical at Halloween and Christmas.
3. Explore Haga and try the giant cinnamon bun, Hagabullen.
4. Try the amazing local restaurants.
5. Visit the museums – many are free with your student card!
