Abstract:

Dan will talk about Relational State Capacity - a latent stock of societal capacity built through everyday interactions between citizens and state agents. Moving beyond infrastructural conceptions of capacity, we argue that mutual recognition in these quotidian exchanges generates spillovers that aggregate into a collective resource. The talk will go beyond the circulated paper, incorporating some of our ongoing empirical projects.
