In my doctoral thesis, I investigated how teachers can facilitate productive mathematical conversations in early years mathematics. My research focused on two pedagogical tools: conversation rules and mathematical drawings, both implemented with the purpose of increasing productivity and mathematical reasoning. My research consists of both literature studies and empirical studies, and my findings show that conversation rules (Ground Rules For Talk) can successfully be implemented in first-grade mathematics classrooms, and that they help pupils explain and discuss mathematical ideas, as well as support them in mathematical reasoning. Children’s drawings were also found to support reasoning and problem-solving. My thesis highlights that children communicate mathematically through multiple modes, such as speech, drawings and gestures, and in summary, my research show how young children’s mathematical reasoning is multimodal, and that in order to provide children with the tools they need for mathematical reasoning, we need to consider all modalities they use to communicate meaning.
