Berry curvature effects in the spectroscopic properties of a topological superconductor

Abstract

The phase-space Berry curvature arises naturally in systems with spatial inhomogeneity and governs the semiclassical dynamics of quasiparticles. In this talk, I will discuss the effects of phase-space Berry curvature on the spectroscopic properties of a topological superconducting heterostructure composed of a Rashba semiconductor proximitized by a ferromagnetic insulator and an s-wave superconductor.  We identify a new contribution to the phase-space Berry curvature, originating from the interplay between Rashba spin-orbit coupling and superconductivity. It strongly influences the semiclassical dynamics of Bogoliubov quasiparticles under spatially varying perturbations and in turn modifies the system’s spectral function and tunneling conductance. In particular, we find a Berry curvature induced feature in the spectral function that can serve as a bulk spectroscopic signature distinguishing topological and trivial superconducting phases.
