The department is home to several research groups which regularly organise seminars to present and discuss current research. The seminars take place both in person and online, and often feature guest speakers from other universities. Please contact the person in charge if you have any questions about attending.
CSM-RESIST
The research group organises open seminars and workshops with the aim of developing and deepening our understanding of social movements, resistance and social change. For over ten years, we have been inviting national and international researchers to present their work.

Environmental Sociology Seminar (EnviroSoc)
The Environmental Sociology Seminar (EnviroSoc) brings together researchers interested in the interactions between social and ecological systems, with particular attention to contemporary environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, and deforestation. The seminar provides a forum for exchange across research areas and fosters dialogue on environmental and societal transformation. Research areas include environmental movements, critical sustainability science, just transitions, climate change adaptation, science–policy relations, food and agricultural systems, and the interconnections between inequality, poverty, and environmental change.

Feminist Seminar in Sociology (FEMSEM)
FEMSEM covers key topics in feminist sociology, including sex, sexuality, gender, intersectionality, LGBTQIA+, power, feminist movement, post-feminism, anti-gender and anti-feminism ideology/movements, feminist epistemology, gender (in)equality, migration, racism, temporality, global south perspectives, racial capitalism, subjectivity, et cetera. FEMSEM is for anyone interested in feminist perspectives, including researchers and students.

General Seminar
The general seminar invites international and national guests to present and discuss ongoing research. The general seminar is also an important forum for jointly discussing and contributing to the quality of ongoing research and doctoral theses at the department. Book launches and lectures by associate professors and professors are followed by a reception.

Governance
The seminar serie presents sociological research on governance, that is, research on how societies, organizations and individuals are governed. This research may deal with overarching issues related to global processes and how the welfare state is organised at the national level, for example in order to determine the influence of politics, the market, civil society and experts. But it may also be about how organisations are governed and how we as individuals are encouraged or prescribed to act in desirable ways.

Migration and Ethnicity (MERGU)
The MERGU research network organises open seminars, conferences and public events to discuss and present research on migration-related topics, often in collaboration with invited guests.

Social Science Methods
This research seminar series focuses on methodological approaches in the social sciences, with a particular emphasis on methods that are less commonly used or that cut across disciplinary traditions.

Sociology of Emotions at the University of Gothenburg – EMOGU
The seminar addresses issues relating to the social significance of emotions across all fields of social science research. This includes, amongst other things, presentations of ongoing or previously published work (including final seminars for dissertations focusing on emotions), thematic seminars (focusing on the theory of the sociology of emotions), and, where required, emotion-focused data analysis and feedback on research proposals from a sociology of emotions perspective. The seminar is primarily aimed at lecturers and researchers (including PhD students) at the university, but Master’s students are also welcome.
