International opportunities

As a degree student at the University of Gothenburg, you can make studies or an internship abroad part of your education. Study at one of our partner universities around the world, gain international experience and have the credits recognised as part of your degree. You can also do an internship with a company or organisation abroad.

Exchange studies

Live on campus in Sydney, explore the bustling streets of Shanghai, study fine art in Italy or science in Ghana. The University of Gothenburg has exchange agreements with universities around the globe.

Which countries and universities you can choose from depends on your field of study at the University of Gothenburg. It is a good idea to start planning early in your studies by considering where you would like to go, when an exchange fits into your programme and what you would like to study.

As an exchange student, you do not pay tuition fees to the host university. Many exchanges in Europe also include a scholarship to help cover additional expenses.

Since you can apply the credits you earn abroad towards your degree at the University of Gothenburg, going on an exchange will not delay your expected graduation date.

Internships and field studies

An internship abroad allows you to develop your knowledge and gain experience of working in an international environment. It also brings you closer to working life and helps you start building an international network that can be valuable in your future career.

You can, for example, do an traineeship with a company or organisation in Europe through the Erasmus programme. You can also complete an internship at an EU institution, or conduct Minor Field Studies in a low-or middle income country.

Several of the internship opportunities and the field studies include scholarships or internship salaries.

Start planning early

Many of the programmes at the University of Gothenburg have a recommended semester for exchange studies. Some programmes include internships as part of the education, and you can choose to do these abroad. The opportunities differ among the educations, so you need to find out what is possible for the programme you intend to take. Please contact the Study Counsellors if you have any questions.

In most cases, you need to submit an application before you can go abroad. The application process and deadlines vary depending on whether you are planning exchange studies, an internship or field studies. You often need to apply one or two semesters before your planned stay abroad, so it is important to start planning well in advance.

You´ll find more information about applications and important dates on this page in the Student portal.

Support for students with disabilities

If you have a permanent disability and receive Study support support during your studies at the University of Gothenburg, you can usually also receive support at the host university while studying abroad. Read more about Study support at the Student Portal.
