About Sofie Jakobsson

Sofie Jakobsson is a Registered Nurse and Associate Professor in Nursing. She has many years of clinical experience working with patients with cancer, both as a nurse and as a research nurse. In 2012, she completed her PhD with a thesis on experiences, symptoms, and symptom management during radiotherapy, and her research has continued to focus on symptoms and signs, as well as person-centred care in relation to the treatment of both malignant and benign tumour diseases. For several years, Sofie has worked as a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Health and Care Sciences. Her position as Senior Lecturer is combined with an appointment as Senior Nurse (Universitetssjukhusöversjuksköterska) (20%) at the Department of Oncology, Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Sofie is also responsible for the subject Nursing at advanced level at the Sahlgrenska Academy.

Research: Sofie’s research focuses on symptoms and their consequences for health, person-centred care, and self-report measures used to assess, for example, fatigue and person-centredness. The focus is on investigating the patient’s perspective regarding experiences of and responses to threats to health, as well as experiences of care. The projects that Sofie leads and participates in aim both to describe experiences and to improve care for patients with long-term conditions, with a focus on tumour diseases. The research projects focus on personcentredness and are conducted in close collaboration within clinical practice. The research includes both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

Ongoing research projects: Sofie is the research leader of a project aimed at developing and evaluating health-promoting and person-centred care for people undergoing immunotherapy for lung cancer. This project is part of the research group SAROC – Sahlgrenska Academy Research in Oncological Care. Sofie is also a member of a multidisciplinary research group that focuses, among other things, on research concerning symptoms and signs in patients with pituitary tumours and on how care can more clearly be based on a person-centred approach.

Clinical practice: Within the Department of Oncology, Sofie leads the work of creating an academic environment for nurses within the clinic. The common denominator of her assignments is to strengthen the connection between theoretical knowledge in nursing and nursing care delivered in clinical practice. Her work includes leading a group of nurses with the aim of increasing opportunities for scientific activity and academic careers for nurses within the Department of Oncology. In collaboration with nurses assigned for clinical development, she also works to develop and update clinical routines related to oncology nursing and to organize and participate in internal educational activities within the department.

Teaching: Since completing her PhD, Sofie has primarily taught at an advanced level. She is the programme director for the Specialist Nursing Programme in Oncological Care. Sofie also teaches on doctoral courses at the Sahlgrenska Academy. Her teaching mainly concerns symptoms and symptom management in relation to health, person-centred care from both theoretical and practical perspectives, and qualitative methodology. Her teaching also includes supervision at undergraduate, advanced and doctoral levels.
