About Pernilla Lagerlöf

I am an Associate Professor of Education at the Department of Education, Communication and Learning. I have a background as a preschool teacher, hold a master’s degree in special education, and received my PhD in 2016 with the dissertation Musical Play: Children interacting with and around music technology. My doctoral dissertation focused primarily on how preschool teachers can support children’s musical learning in connection with music technology and highlighted the importance of framing activities through play. Since completing my PhD, my research has mainly focused on contributing to the development of the theory and conceptual framework of Play-Responsive Early Childhood Education and Care (PRECEC), which offers a way of understanding teaching in a preschool context in which play remains central. The research projects in which I have participated reflect my interest in studying activities in situ in close collaboration with teachers. My research focuses on communication and play interactions within the various media ecologies in which children participate, as well as on the relationship between teaching and play in preschool. My research contributions include studies of children’s meaning-making in play, children’s rights as cultural creators, and teaching and learning in music and other aesthetic domains in preschool. I employ a range of qualitative methods, primarily video observations, complemented by participant observation, focus-group discussions, informal conversations, and interviews.
